Selenicereus undatus — climbing dragon fruit cactus with long green stems

Selenicereus undatus is the dragon fruit cactus behind the white-fleshed pitaya, grown indoors for its long, jointed green stems and climbing, trailing habit. It is a tropical epiphytic cactus with water-storing stems, aerial roots and a strong need for sharp drainage around the root zone.

The stems can sprawl, hang or climb with aerial roots, forming a loose green framework as the plant matures. In bright, warm conditions, mature plants can produce large white night flowers; fruiting needs successful pollination, maturity and enough light, so it is an occasional indoor result.

Selenicereus undatus stem structure and fruiting notes

  • Plant type: Tropical epiphytic cactus with long vining stems.
  • Family: Cactaceae.
  • Native range: Mexico to Honduras, mainly in seasonally dry tropical habitats.
  • Stem shape: Green, three-angled stems with wavy margins and small areoles along the ribs.
  • Growth habit: Trailing, sprawling or climbing with aerial roots along the stems.
  • Flowers: Large white flowers open at night on mature plants in suitable conditions.
  • Fruit: Pink-skinned dragon fruit can develop after successful pollination.

Pot setup for Selenicereus undatus

Selenicereus undatus grows from elongated, water-storing stems that extend outward, downward or upward when given support. A hanging pot lets the stems drop naturally, while a sturdy pole or trellis gives aerial roots a surface to grip as the plant climbs.

The roots need an airy mix that dries well between waterings. A chunky cactus mix with mineral material gives the root zone oxygen and reduces the risk of wet stem bases.

Selenicereus undatus care indoors

  • Light: Give very bright filtered light; harsh midday sun behind glass can mark or dehydrate the stems.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly, then let the mix dry well before watering again.
  • Humidity: Average indoor humidity is usually fine when airflow and drainage are good.
  • Temperature: Keep warm and away from cold windowsills; cold wet substrate can damage roots and stem bases.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky cactus or epiphyte mix with pumice, lava, perlite or coarse bark.
  • Pot choice: Choose a pot with drainage holes and enough weight to balance long stems or a support.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted cactus or balanced houseplant fertilizer.
  • Mineral growing: A mineral-heavy mix can suit this cactus, but a constantly wet reservoir keeps the root zone too damp.
  • Pruning: Trim long stems at a joint to control length or propagate healthy sections.

Common issues with Selenicereus undatus

  • Soft stem bases: Usually point to wet substrate, poor drainage or cold roots.
  • Shrivelled stems: Can follow long dry periods, root damage or very hot direct sun.
  • Brown patches: Sudden direct sun through glass can scorch green stem tissue.
  • Weak stretched growth: Low light produces thinner, less sturdy stems.
  • Scale insects: Check along ribs and areoles, where pests can sit tightly against the stem.

Safety for Selenicereus undatus

Selenicereus undatus is generally classed as non-toxic to cats and dogs. The stems still have small areoles and occasional spines, so handle cuttings and long stems with care.

Botanical background for Selenicereus undatus

The accepted botanical name is Selenicereus undatus; Hylocereus undatus is an older synonym. Selenicereus refers to Selene, the moon, in reference to night-flowering cacti, while undatus means wavy and matches the scalloped stem margins.

In bright warmth, Selenicereus undatus develops long green cactus stems that trail, climb and mature gradually.

One of a Kind — Made Really Well
Color: B4/Denim Multi
Leave it to Coach to create this adorable bag. It has embroidered cherries and small leather leaves. The packing for delivery was unbelievable. All the hardware and leather was protected by small pieces of foam. My only disappointment is that there is no zipper pocket on the inside. It is small so if you carry a lot, this won’t work for you. It will be a nice spring/summer bag.

Instant-On Sight-Love Affair

The bag is adorable! I loved it instantly before even completely unwrapping it. It feels very well made. It's compact but spacious. I'm surprised it doesn't have an inner zipper pocket but it makes up for that by having a zipper that closes the whole bag rather than a snap. And it has 2 outside pockets with closures. It smells like a brand new pair of jeans. I can’t wait to accessorize it and upcycle it to my style. Also, I appreciate learning that it is made with sustainable materials. What a bag! I bought this as a replacement for my Brandon Blackwood waxed denim ESR tote that’s seen better days. They are about the same size but the Coach bag is a bit more spacious. They’re both the same price and seeing as the ESR is 5 years old, I’m surprised the Coach doesn’t cost more. Definitely worth the price. Didn’t want to risk it being sold out to wait for a sale.

Adorable! I gave this to my daughter for her Mother’s Day gift. It’s smaller than I thought, but it’s so cute. Love this.
